about

"IF WE MUST WE MUST" sings The Good Ms Padgett (quoting Mary Poppins), as she leads us into her third full-length release.

The 13-song If We Must We Must, a wild-child adventure through the spiny, sweet, and intricate world of The Good Ms Padgett, is the first GMP album to feature performances by The Good Ms Padgett's family: partner Miggy Littleton and their seven-year-old daughter Penelope.

Co-produced by the Good Ms Padgett and Daniel Littleton of Elizabeth Mitchell and You Are My Flower, If We Must We Must also includes performances by Daniel Littleton, Elizabeth Mitchell, Storey Littleton, and Jean Cook of You Are My Flower, as well as by Tara Jane O'Neil, godmother of the universe.

Following up on 2012's uniquely compelling storytelling album, The Good Ms Padgett Sings The Little Red Hen and Other Stories, IWMWM is an infectious collection of uninhibited songs that effortlessly traverse the diverse terrain of childhood.

The Good Ms Padgett (named thusly by her real-life Brooklyn, NY preschool students) is the irresistible teacher who inspires you to reveal your most radical dance moves as you chant a raucously reassuring rock mantra ("No Such Thing As Monsters"), creatively solve an annoying classroom tattling problem ("Tattle to the Turtle"), and dispel bad dreams about people stealing your candy ("Lollipop Nightmare"). The psychedelic dance/trance "Dance Party Pizza Party," written by the Good Ms Padgett's daughter Penelope and her cousin Storey, draws you in for a consciousness-expanding pizza/dance delirium. When you are tired, The Good Ms Padgett lulls you to sleep with lovely, intimate, and fantastical visions of singing rabbits, meditative bumblebees, flowers, trees, and your own sweet-dream-filled bedtime castle.

In addition to her own intricate and unbridled songs, The Good Ms Padgett brings her inimitable perspective to her covers of some of the best of the weird lyricists: the playful and contemplative voices of Jonathan Richman ("Hey There Little Insect") and Michael Hurley ("Black and Yellow Bee") are effortlessly inhabited by The Good Ms Padgett; The Vaselines' "Molly's Lips," takes on a sweetly unconventional viewpoint through a new interpretation inspired by daughter Penelope.

The title track, "If We Must We Must," like the classic Mary Poppins "Spoonful of Sugar" it references, is a playful yet matter-of-fact exhortation to children and grownups alike to expeditiously and uncomplainingly tend to unavoidable tasks: "If we must eat our peas, we eat our peas; if we must scrub our knees, we scrub our knees." Like Mary Poppins herself, however, The Good Ms Padgett is no dull task master. In The Good Ms Padgett's world, the must imperative extends far beyond cleaning ones room: The Good Ms Padgett insists even more firmly (yet politely) that you converse with insects, consider the growing grass, trees, and flowers, admire the sun and clouds, acknowledge the powers of small fish (in French), and kiss your mother.

about

The Good Ms Padgett New York

The Good Ms Padgett sings wise and wild and wonderfully absurd songs for children and babies and their grownups. “Think of her as the Pied Piper, but with a guitar. That’s how much kids love Brooklyn’s Anna Padgett… Your little one will fall under the singer’s folksy/funky spell.” (The New York Post) ... more
